Mit dem Ziel, die lateinamerikanische Geschichte in ihren globalen Verflechtungen zu betrachten, hat sich 2009 eine neue Arbeitsgruppe unter dem Dach der ADLAF gegründet. Lateinamerika soll hier vor dem Hintergrund von zentralen globalen Entwicklungen, von Wandlungsprozessen und von damit verbundenen Erfahrungen seit der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts analysiert werden. Dabei werden im Rahmen dieser Arbeitsgruppe ausdrücklich auch Gegenbewegungen, bewusste Abgrenzungen und alternative Entwürfe thematisiert, die für Lateinamerika ebenfalls kennzeichnend sind.

Cultures and Conflict: Exploring Cultural Dimensions of the Cold War from Latin America

While some scholars have recently contributed notions of a “New” or “Second” Cold War to public debates over current global political developments, it is difficult to grasp their significance for Latin America when so much remains unknown about the legacies of the Cold War in the region. This symposium thus expands previous academic research that has until recently prioritized the USA-USSR super-power conflict and the study of diplomatic, political, and economic history. Instead, it focuses on the cultural history of the Cold War, grounded on two thematic pillars: the relationship between the Eastern European Socialist Bloc and Latin America, and Latin American interregional relations. Featuring the works of a diverse group of international scholars from different disciplines, it contributes four panels addressing questions of music and political agency, oral histories and Cold War memories, education policy, and the role of culture for foreign policy.
Aunque la noción de una “Nueva” o “Segunda” Guerra Fría está siendo debatida en círculos académicos en vista de los actuales acontecimientos políticos globales, sigue siendo desafiante y a la vez importante comprender el significado del pasado para América Latina cuando aún se desconoce tanto sobre los legados de la Guerra Fría en la región. Este simposio aborda este problema, centrándose en la historia cultural desde dos ejes principales: la relación entre el Bloque Socialista de Europa del Este y Latinoamérica, y las relaciones interregionales latinoamericanas. De esta forma, amplia estudios previos que han tendido a priorizar el conflicto entre las superpotencias EEUU-URSS y el estudio de la historia diplomática, política y económica. El evento agrupa a un grupo diverso de académicos internacionales trabajando desde varias disciplinas, y ofrece cuatro paneles en relación a cuestiones de música y acción política, historia oral y memorias de la Guerra Fría, políticas de educación, y el rol de la cultura en las relaciones internacionales.
